Scandinavian Mulled Wine

4 December 2018

Mulled Wine, or gløgg in Norwegian, is my favourite drink around Christmas. It is super easy to make and it makes the whole house smell wonderful.

Mulled Wine

Ingredients

1 bottle of red wine
6 cardamom pods
6 cloves
300 g sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
2 cm of fresh ginger – sliced
2 star anise
Orange peel from one orange
Optional add in: Vodka, cognac or rum to taste

For serving

1 dl raisins
1 dl chopped almonds
A cinnamon stick or slices of orange

Method

Heat wine, orange peel and spices slowly. Add the sugar and stir until it is dissolved. You can make it the day before and leave it in the fridge overnight to draw the flavors out. Add the vodka, cognac or rum and heat carefully just before serving. Make sure it doesn’t boil, or all your alcohol will evaporate.

Add raisins and almonds to the cups you are serving in, and poor the mulled wine over. You could decorate with a slice of orange or use a cinnamon stick as a stirrer for a festive touch.
