So here is the last list for you, that will help you stay on top. Remember to leave place in your calendar for relaxing evenings and maybe a trip to the spa. It will all be over before you know it. Don't get caught up in the stress. It will still be Christmas even if your drawers aren't clean. Make some Christmas memories with your family and friends.
1. Clean the house
I do a major clean and tidy early in December. This will save me the stress when everything else is going on at the end of December. Besides, if you want to start decorating, it's is better to do it once the house is clean.
2. Decorate
I decorate the house a little at the time, starting with the advent stars in the windows at 1. December. The Christmas tree is the last thing to go up, around 1-2 weeks before.
3. Wrap that last-minute present...
You always get one or two presents you did not expect. Have a bottle of wine, or some cookies as a back-up plan in case someone brings you something.
4. Mail presents and cards
Mail your Christmas cards and presents well before the deadlines. It also saves the recipients from a last-minute trip to the post office.
5. Plan the perfect holiday menu
Are you invited for any dinners, are you eating out or are you hosting any parties? It is a good idea to keep your calendar at hand, when you plan your meals. In Norway, a lot of the traditional food is quite meaty and heavy. So, I try to plan some light meals in-between the traditional food. Remember to leave some days open for left over meals. The joy of not having to cook, and just slouch around in your pajamas is part of the great experience.
6. Stock up on food and drinks.
Create a shopping list from the menu you created. Then you will avoid buying to much food. This is the perfect time to buy groceries online, if available where you are. It is so worth it not having to search the store for items, standing in line and then carrying everything home.
7. Bake…but not too much
8. Plan your Christmas table
The Christmas meal is pretty important in our family. I set the table the day before the big day, and make sure it looks Christmassy and inviting. Iron the tablecloths and napkins and check that the tableware is clean, and you have enough plates, glasses and cutlery.
9. Hang the stockings
Fill the stockings for the kids (and maybe also for the grown-ups – one is never too old you know…)
10. The finishing touches
Do the last minute cleaning. Light the candles. Put a log on the fire. Play Christmas music. The finishing touches makes all the difference for the mood. So don't forget.
