Hygge - for nicer homes and happier people

27 November 2018

Hygge is a norwegian and danish word for a cosyness and contentment in everyday life. Somehow "hygge" has made it's way into the british dictionary among new words like brexit and trumpism.  Although the word is most knowt to be Danish the word hygge comes from a Norwegian word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy. It is unimaginable to people from Scandinavians that there isn't a word for "hygge" in the English language, since we use it so much. So here are some tips to bring some more hygge to your life.

Create your nest

Hygge is about homeliness. Scandinavian homes often have a clean fresh style, with a limited color palette. You will often find design furniture or a lamp, and with cosy pillows, blankets and a fireplace.

Buy candles

I have heard foreigners say that coming into a norwegian home before christmas makes looks like we are about to perform a satanic ritual on you. They are everywhere!

Use the word hygge

I have realised that when you use hygge to describe a situation, it definately become more noticable. The more you talk about hygge, the easier it is to achieve it.

Start crafting

Why not try knitting or maybe try paper craft? It is amazing how a craft slows the mind and makes you calmer. It also gives you that great feeling of achievement.

Get your cosy lounge-wear on

Changing out of you work wear is a must to have instant hygge. Make sure you have some soft comfy clothes you can't wait to get into. It does not have to look pretty.

Enjoy the moment

Hygge is about finding pleasure in the everyday moments, to slow down and take it all in. Find pleasure in taking a long bath, having a cup of tea, baking cakes with the kids or having a pajama party. Curl up under the blanket by the fireplace and just be present in the moment. That is what hygge is all about.
